I Don’t Want My MTV

Whatever teensy shred of integrity MTV had left just went out the window after tonight.

Britney Spears won 3 VMA’s for a song no one has heard or really seen a video for.  That entire show was one big-ass apology for putting that girl on tv last year when it was obvious she was fucked out of her mind.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I heart Brit Brit. I would love nothing more than for that chick to make the most extraordinary comeback in the history of pop music and sell a bazillion trillion records. Watching her fall from grace made really sad for her. And seeing her chick meat flashed all over the internet was disturbing. I just imagined all of the creepy old men who secretly had posters of her in their nightstands had all of their wet dreams come true. GROSS.

But, even I knew that Katy Perry chick had the song of summer. And I’m old.

God, I remember watching MTV when I was a kid and thinking that it was the epitomy of cool. Granted, I was 10 when I first got it. But still- the VJ’s were average people who had a cool ass job. They weren’t little kids. They didn’t look like they just walked off the set of The Hills. They could actually do a stand up interview and not come off as a total ass-licking moron. They were actual news people who knew about world affairs AND pop music. You felt like they had a passion for music and world events and for the twenty-something crowd that was trying to figure out what the fuck to do with life.

Tabitha Sorren? Allison Stewart? Those chicks were all about political and world awarness as well as the latest Madonna album. Martha Quinn? Do you think that little mousy chick would ever be a VJ now? Or Mark Goodman with his bushy-ass fro? Hell no.

These people now look like the only thing they could carry a converation about is what kind of cellphone you carry and the shade of lipgloss that shines the most. Hell, even tonight the “fashion area” or whatever the hell they called it was just a big fat fucking fail. The ridiculous dribble about clothes was just sad. Taylor Swift didn’t even know what fucking dress she was wearing.

The entire channel has just become a joke to me. Maybe I’m old and just romanticising my youth- but I used to eat, sleep and die by MTV. Everything about it. I even toyed with trying to work for them at one point but was too scared to actually persue it. It was cutting edge and hip and really was about the music. It didn’t dictate what was cool- it reported on what was cool the minute it was introduced.

Now? It just seems like it bends over for whoever will make them the most money. The pathetic waste that passes for talent on that channel is ridiculous. The pomp and circumstance around mediocre performers that whore themselves out on a regular and lip sync performances is disgusting.

Where are the legends? The Madonnas and Michaels and Mariahs and Aerosmiths and Run DMCs and Beasties and Janets and Bon Jovis and Pearl Jams? I know we have some current ones that fit that bill- Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keyes… Where are those acts? Ones with incredible talent who push the envelope but only to where its interesting and not completely obscene or mind-numblingly stupid.

Aside from Pink, there wasn’t one performance worth a lick of shit.

Fuck, I’m old. But tonight’s show was shameless and was brought down to an entire new level of awful. The kids today will never know how ground-breaking and monumental MTV truly was and what a sad shell of its former self it has become.

RIP MTV. The once powerhouse of awesome has officially left the building.

-Missing the days when The Real World was cutting edge television.

PS- John Norris needs to retire. That dude is my parent’s age and was barely relevent back in the day. Now he just looks so pathetic and sad. Like, honestly dude. Get a life and go behind the scenes if working there is that important to you. You are embarassing yourself.

  1. I’ve pretty much always thought MTV sucked.

The last (only) cool thing I can remember watching on MTV was Nirvana’s Unplugged.

See, I remember when MTV was the cool thing and laughing at VH1 trying to compare. And yes, I’m old too, but I don’t think you have to be ‘old’ to realize what an epic fail this VMA show was.

Taylor Swift, whom I actually LIKE, came off as a total dumbass. Everything was ‘awesome’ or ‘fantastic’. I liked how she switched the subject when she couldn’t remember who she was wearing. Katy Perry ‘disclosing’ that she wasn’t wearing designer, but stuff from a costume shop – yeah, that was a big ol’ shock (not). Miley Cyrus just made it worse with her ‘I don’t know what any of that means, I just want to win’. Um… shut up, whore, and go be a teenager.

The constant ‘Jonas Brothers are virgins’ jokes got old quick. The performances sucked all over the place. Even the ones that could’ve been good, they had to mess with and make them suck. I was just so sick and disappointed in the entire show.

And yes, while I was happy to see Brit win 3 awards tonight – you absolutely knew they were staged. C’mon, I think I saw the video to the song on Dlisted and that’s the ONLY time I heard it, really. But if it helps get her back on track and make a comeback, then so be it. Brilliant publicist, in my opinion (watch how many people go out and buy Brit’s album now).

Russell Brand, who is BRITISH, should not have pushed for the election of Obama. I was a little upset by that. Not because it was about Obama – I’d have been just as upset if he pushed McCain… but dude, you’re not from here, you can’t VOTE here, you don’t even LIVE here – why are you trying to push what you think is right for us? Have an opinion if you want, but don’t outright tell us that we’re racist if we don’t elect Obama. That shit just didn’t fly with me. If I choose not to vote for Obama, it’s for a milliion OTHER reasons other than the fact that he’s a black man. Russell Brand was a fail in my book.

I have a million other thoughts on this but I’m not blonging in your blog. I was just disgusted with the show (even more so than last year) and if anyone starts to wonder what’s wrong with the kids of today… turn on MTV. It’s pretty self-explanatory after that. :s

Awww! I love John Norris! And I miss Kurt Loder. But I agree with everything else you said. I’m 25, but I can still remember when MTV played music beyond early morning, and when the Real World centered on social issues and not everyone being naked and having sex. “Remember when MTV played only music videos?” I do, but just barely.
